In the early 1860s he studied in the atelier of Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, where he became acquainted with Bazille, Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Together they would paint landscapes en plein air (out-of-doors) in order to realistically capture transient effects of sunlight.
