    • Susie, I read the captions and just got back to read your info. Which was great. I came back to tell Mary Ann that I have indeed kept track and hope she will continue to moniter her littler ones.

    • So cute this photo, Mary Ann, and very interesting that Susie wrote about dove's nesting habit. Lovely shot and story. Hugs from Italy. Claudia

    • It amazes me when we write the captions and they are not read. This is so pretty. Wonderful that they raise their young year around in Florida. They breed up to 6 times a year in warm climates. I think the doves have the most interesting nesting habits of any birds. Both parents build a flimsy platform nest of twigs located from 5 to 25 feet up in a tree or bush. Two white eggs hatch in about 14 - 16 days. One egg is laid in the evening, and the second on the next morning. The male usually incubates the egg during the day, and the female incubates at night. Crop milk begins to be produced a couple of days before the eggs are due to hatch, by both parents. The parents may cease to eat at this point in order to be able to provide the chicks with milk uncontaminated by seeds, which the very young chicks would be unable to digest. The chicks are fed on pure crop milk for the first week or so of life. Nestlings, cared for by both parents, fledge in about 12-14 days. The parents continue to care for the fledglings until they are 25 to 27 days old. I'm sure this is more than you wanted to know. LOL

    • What an interesting subject, and smart use of flash to light up and isolate the subject. Terry

    • She is a brave one to make a nest that close to humans!! You captured her beauty very nicely.

    • Oh how sweet, we had one sitting on a nest, and then we had a storm and it tore down the tree and we never did find the nest. But she came back for three days looking for it and sounding so sad....

    • I love the Mourning Doves! What a delightful photo. They built a nest in the gutter alongside the roof our house one spring! Go figure! Have a great weekend. Sharon

    • I love it. When I loved in Georgia, I had bird nests in several of my pots and in the bushes surrounding our house. A Robin made her nest on the ledge over the front porch. and Blue birds nested in my wren house, goes to prove all those bluebird houses I put up were all for nothing. Beautiful photo.

    • Oh - this is gorgeous! So pretty - I wonder if she is sitting on eggs? The mourning dove's beauty is subtle, not outrageous like the cardinal. I love this photo! - DeeAnne :)
