This one struck my eye..not just because of the "volcanic"...bu t I guess that would apply since you were in Portland at the time St. Helens errupted. I visited Oregon (and the US) the first time in April 1980 and of course fell head over heels in love..we left to go back to Germany on April 18 after we had witnessed a bunch of small erruptions, smoke plumes etc..it was quite an event. But then on May 18, I guess everyone was just totally shocked when the mountain just blew it's whole top! My in-laws live in Vernonia (Coast Range) and had a few inches of ash on the ground. The following year (1981) we moved to Oregon and got to see what was left of the mountain and all the devastation caused down river too! Unbelievable...now over the years we've tried to go back every 2 -5 years to watch nature regenerate and it is a small miracle! Let's hope next time it is not Mt. Hood or Mt. Rainier that blow, that could be a huge disaster with lots of casualties!
